Sunday Safety Watch 01/03/2016 to 01/16/2016

So, here's what's new. A Go Long Beach Run found increased tagging on 01/17/2016 in the west end of the neighborhood. There was very little to the east. Dumped items are also up. The blue line represents where that tagging emanates from. Keep an eye on the alleyway between Rose and Gaviota south of 15th. There was also a cluster of crime including drug possession and robberies. They start around Cherry and Anaheim and then trend east and north east. This is a cluster more than a trend, as the trend is week. There were also thefts just outside our neighborhood along Old Zaferiia Way that trend back into the neighborhood. Thefts from cars are on the rise, so please keep them locked in that area.

This is the map from this week. You will notice a cluster of assaults just inside our neighborhood along Old Zaceria Way. While nothing is happening in that Blue Circle, it's where virtually everything emanates from. You will also notice a trend of property damage along Walnut and Anaheim heading north towards Rose and 14th. That crosses the blue line in the previous map, which is where all the unreported tagging originates. There is also a trend of property crime just outside our neighborhood heading north west. Both maps show clusters along Old Zaferia Way, inside Rotary Centennial Park and along the South East corner of the neighborhood.

The latest Go Long Beach Run did see two cars exchanging drugs at around 12pm just outside of Rotary Centennial Park. Plates 6F58237/ 6HZU68B. Since a lot of new acticity in the area is drug related, and that leads to car theft, please keep an extra eye open in the area.

Neighborhood Expansion: There have also been shootings since the last update, but since these are outside the borders of our neighborhood, I will handle them in a separate update. However, below I am including a map of gang related tagging, so you see where the unreported tagging starts and which direction it trends.

This information comes from a new map which tracks dumping, tagging and encampments. You can find that map here. The graphics are weeks at a time, the map should show where things are clustering and overlay with the Crime Reports Map nicely. I am still working out the kinks now.

I will be working with Josephine Villaseñor to bring this kind of Map to the Wrigley area as well, while we expand the Community Watch for all of the Sixth District in the time to come.

A Month Ago We Hosted A Clean Up

A month ago we hosted a clean up that brought out more than twenty four volunteers. Here are the very delayed pictures. Litter Free Long Beach also helped by bringing in a large crusher so we could empty the alleyways. 

My neighbors, who have said they didn't feel comfortable doing a clean up, all came out and helped clean up the alley behind the U-Haul Station. In all, we moved more than nine tons of trash, we filled the dumpster in about two hours and Litter Free Long Beach got a lot of old electronics out of our way, the stuff the dumpster couldn't take.

Since April we hosted more than fifty five clean ups. We submitted more than 800 Go Long Beach Requests. We helped over six neighborhood associations. We had more than 62 safety updates and participated in the Anaheim Re visioning Study. 

This year we're focusing on more community building, bringing better leadership to the Sixth District and  and shining an intense light on community safety by bringing Safe Passage to more neighborhood schools.

The trees have also been trimmed in virtually the entire neighborhood including MacArthur Park itself.  Updates will come to this site every day from this point on.

Safety Alert: Fatal Shooting Sunday: Pine & PCH

One Miles West of Neighborhood Boundaries: Police on Monday investigated the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 23-year-old man in Long Beach. The man, identified by coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter as 23-year-old Long Beach resident Andre Berero, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Sunday Safety Update: 08/16/2015 - 08/23/2015

Disclaimer: Please note these maps are meant to show which direction crime is trending, areas to keep an extra eye on and places to remain vigilant in order for Central Long Beach residents to remain safe. That said, previous trends don't guarantee future trends will repeat in the same direction and patterns. Also, an absence of crime in one area, does not guarantee an absence in that same area later on. as well. 

The first thing you will notice about this map is a homicide just outside AOC7 boundaries on Tuesday 08/18/2015 at around 9:15pm. While this is out of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood, it's close enough that we are going to look at it. This was a fight that erupted into someone being struck fatally with a bottle. A 50-year-old suspect, Enrique Pina Carillo, is in custody. If you look at the previous week's map, always available on the neighborhood safety page, you will see crime was trending that direction before this homicide took place.

Neighborhood Expansion is On. That means in addition to reporting any tagging, dumping or suspicious behavior in MacArthur Park, our own neighborhood, we will also be keeping an eye on AOC7 for the few weeks, as well as an area to the west of the AOC7. It looks like activity in that area is trending west. Activity along 17th and Cerritos is trending southwest and converging in about the same area.For that reason, we're going to keep an eye on exactly that area, especially after 9:00pm.

Earlier news was that police had released footage of a person of interest in the June 28th homicide of Iran Maese. You can reread that release. We embedded all the videos and even captured a picture of the person in the video to enlarge it.

In the MacArthur Park Neighborhood, there are car thefts starting around Anaheim and Peterson trending up towards Gaviota and 17th and then towards Sherman and PCH. I am going to go out on a limb and say the lack of car thefts around Rotary Centennial Park will not continue into next week. Please reread the following article to help keep your car and belongings safe. 

Just to the east of our neighborhood it looks like some car thefts are trending southwest and then back up northwest where they trend back into out neighborhood. Because of this, be very cautious around Anaheim and Dawson. Also anyone who lives south of the neighborhood keep a close eye on 11th Street from Walnut as far east as Templel. There were a lot of things happening on 11th, including two robberies, starting at Gardenia and 11th that then also trend northwest back towards the MacArthur Park Neighborhood.

Early warning this week. Keep safe around Peterson and 15th as well as on PCH between Gardenia and Cherry.

Concilman Dee Andrews To Host Budget Summit Tonight.

Long Beach City Councilmembers Dee Andrews and Roberto Uranga will host budget summits for the Sixth and Seventh Districts on Monday, August 10 at 6:00PM at Veterans Park in Long Beach, their offices announced yesterday.

According to a release, Andrews and Uranga are using the meeting as a means of reaching as much of the community as possible before the commencement of the City Council Budget Sessions regarding the 2016 Budget. All residents of the 6th and 7th District are welcome to attend. And attending in our often overlooked neighborhoods would probably be a very good idea.

Spaulding Clean Up: Junipero to St Louis Done

Special thanks to Azul and the Orange County Credit Union for sending help on today's clean up. It covered Spaulding Street from Junipero to St Louis and the Spaulding Court Alley just south of it.

There will be no clean up next Saturday as I will be enrolled on the city's Certified Emergency Response Training program. Based on all the black out, it looks like we may need it.

There is another small section of the alley we'll get in an unannounced clean up, just for the sake of being thorough.

Clean Up: Saturday 08/01/2015: 10am: Spaulding and Junipero

Announced Clean Up Orange Anaheim to 15th Finished

There was an announced clean up of Orange Street from Anaheim to 15th. just shy of Rosa Park's Park yesterday. The street was significantly cleaner than the first time it was hit, especially around the vacant lot at Werner and Orange. The one place that is still in need of some TLC, is next to the Dollar Tree at 15th Street.

It was good to meet four neighbors on Orange, all of whom expressed an interest in helping build a nicer community. Though to be fair, one resident called that Saturday a little hot and humid to be picking up trash. Our next clean up will be on Saturday August 1st. This is a special clean up in that it will be focused on MacArthur Park to prepare it for the Night Market the next day.

Sherman Clean Up 15th to PCH Finished

There was an announced clean up of 15th street today. And there were some volunteers, so things went a little faster. We'd like to express our appreciation to Frank, a resident since February who helped for almost an hour and a half with the worst side of Sherman Street. For those who are not familiar with the layout of Sherman, one side is very wide with diagonal parking spaces so the help was very much appreciated.

With some help, sherman was clean in just under 3 hours.

In all about 96 gallons of trash was removed. Next week, at 10am on Saturday, we will round out our three week focus on the east end of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood when we tackle cleaning Stanton Street from 15th all the way to PCH. Actually, Stanton doesn't go all the way to PCH, so we will be tackling Stanton from 15th, just shy of PCH. Everyone in the neighborhood is welcome to join in. Everything you need to participate will be provided.

Walnut Ave Clean From PCH to Anaheim

Okay, this clean up took a little longer than I had hoped, but Walnut Ave is clean again from PCH to Anaheim Street. The picture above shows how much trash was taken off the street this morning. The center shows how much trash can be left behind by a single vendor. Every flyer you see above is from the LA Gaviota Market on Anaheim and Gaviota. And that doesn't even include their flyers that came from south of 14th street.

When you multiply that by how many streets are in our neighborhood, you can clearly see how one market can make a huge difference, positive or negative. So far I have asked every business with an email address to take the city's anti litter pledge.

I am again asking every business in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood to follow this link, and agree to keep Long Beach and their neighborhood clean.

There were some pleasant surprises in today's clean up. Several street signs reported as damaged or tagged were fixed. The most important was the school sign next to Whittier Elementary that had the residue of gang tagging and looked like it was from a Mad Max film. Both that sign and a crooked and tagged one way sign were fixed almost as soon as they were reported.

One of the reasons Walnut takes so long is the street is well taken care of north of 14th street. Then after 14th street, specifically next to some of the larger apartments, it starts to look like the above before and after section. That little stretch of land, takes more than an hour to clean that thoroughly.
