Neighborhood Safety

The city does have a neighborhood watch program. And quite a few have been springing up in the neighborhood. Community Watch is a crime prevention program that involves individual groups working with the police to affect crime. Crime prevention resources are available online regarding current crime trends, crime prevention, and safety techniques. Community Watch encourages participants to keep a watchful eye, not only on the block where they live but the community as a whole, and report suspicious and potential criminal behavior. Community Watch begins with a block approach and expands to include others in the surrounding area and scope of influence. Participants are encouraged to reach out to businesses, nearby schools, and non-profit organizations to get to know each other and communicate.

For more details on setting up a neighborhood watch visit the city's Community Watch Page.

REMOVAL OF GRAFFITI
  1. Go Long Beach Online: This is a great resource to get gang tagging out of the neighborhood. If the tagging is on private property the owner is given a paint voucher to cover it up. If it's city property, the city will handle it.The online version requires you to enter an address and then drag the marker to the exact problem. The phone ap senses the address when you enter the issue.
  2. Go Long Beach PD: This is like Go Long Beach. It's meant to allow you to text tips and map out crime trends in your area. At the moment there is only a mobile version of the ap.
  3.  Call the graffiti Hotline @ (562) 570-2773.
REPORTING MONITORING CRIME
  1. Crime Reports: Simply type in the address and zoom in or out. This site shows a long list of incidents in your area and sex offenders appear too. There is a simple code to see what type of crime it is. You can also narrow what type of crime you are interested in and the range of dates. They also have a security camera registration that allows you o give access of your security cameras to law enforcement.
  2. Long Beach Crime News: A simple list of Long Beach related criminal activity. Very easy to follow and read. Will give you a leg up on what's happening in your area.
  3. Crime Stoppers: The purpose of Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers is to prevent and reduce crime, by forming a partnership among the community, law enforcement and the media to offer anonymity and cash rewards to anyone providing information leading to an arrest, thereby making the community a safer place for all who live or work in the region.
  4. Long Beach Crime Statistics: I am still looking for a way to break this down by zip.
HOMICIDE LINKS
  1. Unsolved Homicides: A link that allows you to zoom in on homicides in a given area that are unsolved. Not up to the minute but a good resource for cold cases in the 90813 area.
  2. The LA Times Murder Map: The same information as reported by the LA Times with links to stories related to the crime.
  3. The LB Report: Has detailed maps of violent crimes. This site was better organized in 2007. Since then, the category pages are outdated, but the main page and the information it will tell you is very useful, especially the district crime maps.
PREVENTION LINKS
  1. Preventing Car Theft: I noticed most of the crime in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood was car theft. So here is a compilation of be best tips for recognizing you may be a target, preventing theft if you are and how to deal with it after it happens

The principles listed below are the result of long-term research studies on the origins of drug abuse behaviors and the common elements of effective prevention programs.
 PROPERTY OWNER TOOLS
  1. A Guide To Liquor Licenses Objections: Within Central Long Beach, I have found liquor stores inside of liquor stores. The law gives residents am opportunity to object when new ones open, this link is the best break down I could find of the process. . - NEW
  2. About two years ago I invested in eight Swann Security Cameras. Do they always deter criminals? No. However, it cost me only $300 for eight cameras and a 500gb hard drive. Also the Internet Explorer plug in allows me to watch my home when I am away.
  3. I found solar flood lights for added security. If they are not hard wired, the solar flood lights work best in areas of low traffic. On the side of my home they last all night and put out a good amount of light. In front, where a lot of people walk at night, you're better off with hard wired security lights.
  4. I keep my building clean. Bad people are less likely to visit a place that looks like someone is watching over it. I also pick up around any building for sale or for rent. I don't want anyone who moves in near by thinking this neighborhood is a great stop for anyone who won't care for it.

PREVIOUS MACARTHUR PARK SAFETY UPDATES

Safety Update 62: 11/29 - 12/05/2015: There is increased gang tagging in the neighborhood, it will be reported the day it appears. There are also increased dumped items along 17th Street and 15th. On the bright side, the trees have all been trimmed on 17th, 15th and 14th leading to a much brighter neighborhood. There was a continued drop off in crime.T There were a trend of breaking and entering around Walnut and PCH trending south west. These have stopped. Most of the crimes we are seeing are car thefts or thefts from cars....

Safety Update 61: 11/22/2015 - 11/28/2015:  So this week, in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood, there was a steep drop off in crime. There is more tagging, both reported and unreported. There is an attempt by the taggers to try and claim Fire Station 10 and the alley behind the U-Haul Station. Because of this, both will be monitored every single day until it stops. There is a trend of property crime leading into some thefts from cars along the east side of Junipero. I will remind everyone again to keep your cars locked and read this article.

Safety Update 60: 11/25/2015: What the map shows is a steep drop in crime this week within the MacArthur Park Neighborhood. There were some assaults just outside of the AOC7 to the west heading North East into the Poly/ Central neighborhood. Be real cautious in this area as there was a homicide there not long ago. The two for one were car thefts at 11th and Molino, this trends towards a robbery just outside our neighborhood towards vandalism at 14th and Dawson.

Safety Update 59: Yesterday I went with District Six Candidate Josephine A VillaseƱor at the District One Willmore Community Watch Meeting. Some great news from the meeting. Graffiti reports will now be handled on weekends too. In other words, if tagging happens, you no longer have to wait until Monday for it to get painted over. Also, Rep Lena Gonzalez initiative to light up the alleys in District One, may spread to all of Long Beach, with an initiative coming up before City Council in December. Thank you to Lena Gonzalez and District One from the MacArthur Park Community Association.

Safety Update 58: 11/16/2015. The MacArthur Park Neighborhood: Notice there is a trend of burglaries around Anaheim and Raymond in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood heading South East out of the neighborhood. Thefts from cars seems to be trending south from Rotary Centenial Park towards Orizaba. Also keep an extra eye open around Anaheim and Obispo. Neighborhood expansion becomes a weekly feature.

Safety Update 57: 11/08/2015 - 11/14/2015: This safety update has some bad news. Unfortunately, on Tuesday 11/10/2015 at about 9:10pm there was a homicide at Gundry and 14th Street. There is a string of assaults trending that direction. There is a suspect in custody. Thank you to the Long Beach Police. Here is the original article on the shooting.

Safety Update 56: 10/25/2015 - 11/07/2015: There was a a trend of residential burglaries on the streets just north of 15th last week. They begin around Sherman and 15th on Sunday and trend both east and west into this week. Afterwards, they trended west and north. Also note there is a pattern of burglaries on the other side of Rotary Centennial Park this week and last week there was a trend of auto thefts trending up, in about the same place. Please read up on preventing burglaries, since they are clearly

Safety Update 55: 10/18/2015 - 10/24/2015: We are beginning a series of community walks through the MacArthur Park Neighborhood. They will take place after 10pm and focus on those areas that currently need the most attention. There will be at least three community walks a week, two during the weekdays and one on the weekend.Tonight's walk saw reduced loitering in the alley behind Anaheim, but the plaza at Walnut and Anaheim is still an issue.

Safety Update 54: 10/11/2015 - 10/17/2015: First, crime is not only up, but it is up significantly for the MacArthur Park Neighborhood. The line up Cherry is partially the result of two shooting that happened in our neighborhood and appear to be gang related. The shootings took place around 15th and Cherry. There will be an intense graffiti/ dumped item/ a neighborhood patrol for the next two weeks. There was a lot of graffiti that popped up just prior to this and that seems to be a reliable indication some type of violence is about to occur.

Safety Update 53: 10/04/2015 - 10/10/2015: That map for this week in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood looks worse than it is. The biggest issue is the tagging has picked up. Keep an eye on 14th and Walnut, the south end of Rose and Anaheim and the north end of PCH and Gardenia. Notice that car thefts are trending towards Junipero and Anaheim. However, know that this is a much weaker pattern than last week. They seem to be trending that way, but if you look at a larger picture you can argue there is no real pattern.

Safety Update 52: 09/27/2015 - 10/03/2015: This week's map shows that inside the MacArthur Park Neighborhood we saw a nice improvements this week. There were only three reported incidents inside our borders and two them were a stolen care being found. One was an assault on the north end of MacArthur Park itself. There was a build up of tagging along Anaheim trending West. It will all be dealt with within the next two days. Because there is another clean up scheduled for the east end of our neighborhood on Saturday, we will also do an extensive Go Long Beach run for all of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood before that clean up begins.

Safety Update: 51: 09/20/2015 - 09/26/2015: Inside the MacArthur Park Neighborhood the map looks good. I am most concerned with what I see inside the AOC7, Cambodia Town East and the Zaferia Neighborhood to the east of Old Zaferia Way. First off, here's what the map shows. Within out neighborhood, the most concerning robbery trend starts at Anaheim and Junipero and seems to trend northeast and out of the neighborhood. What concerns me even more is the trend of car thefts, and thefts from vehicles heading southeast, right where that trend ends.

Safety Update 50: 09/13/2015 - 09/18/2015: This map looks really good overall. There is a few things going on outside the neighborhood. There are some random scattered activity outside the neighborhood border. The most obvious is on the other side of Alamitos and 17th. Since there have been two shootings in this area, keep your eye open here, be safe and stay observant. There is a weak trend showing that activity trending north east.

Safety Update 49: 09/06/2015 - 09/12/2015: This update shows a very scattered pattern. The only big pattern, which isn't clear above, is a lot was going on Wednesday 09/09/2015; this is the same day as the fatal shooting at 2100 Pasadena listed below. Starting with the map itself there is a robbery on the Whittier Elementary Campus, the next day there is a theft in the same area.

Safety Update 48: A man suspected of carrying a gun was arrested by Long Beach police at MacArthur Park Thursday afternoon following an officer-involved shooting according to authorities. Later reports added the suspect was not hit and officers were not injured. At the moment, the entire park is closed down as a crime scene, as is Anaheim from Orange to Walnut.

Safety Update 47: MacAarthur Park Neighborhood. June to July crime comparison. Summary: In August there were 39 total Incidents ( a 22% Decrease in crime). Theft from Vehicles, theft of vehicles, robbery, breaking and entering, homicide, quality of life, are all trending down. Assaults, robbery and property crime are trending up.

Safety Update 46: [08/30/2015 - 09/05/2015]: You will notice that there are assaults and thefts that start at 14th and Gaviota and trend South West. While there isn't a lot happening in our neighborhood, that assault was a big incident. It happened on Thursday: 09/03/2015 at 5:47am. This shooting was not fatal. That said, after it happened we made plans to clean Gaviota south of 15th Street this week. We are currently half done. This is the second shooting in Long Beach this week, the first happened two days earlier St. Mary's two days earlier. A subject is in custody.

Safety Alert 45: [08/23/15 - 08/29/15]: The first thing you should notice is there is a trend of car thefts east of Rotary Centennial Park and Orizaba Park. From each park, the thefts trend along Old Zaferia Way, west and towards the center. If this pattern continues, this map will look very similar next week, except the car thefts will be on the west side of Old Zaferia Way. Please reread how to protect yourself from car thefts, if you live in that affected area. This trend was predicted last week.

Safety Alert 44: A black sedan plate #7MAL517 was doing very dangerous turns at the intersection of 15th and Gaviota and 14th and Gaviota. These doughnuts could have killed someone easily or damaged property. It's a smaller black sedan. Please be on high alert if you see a car acting erratically in the area. The car turned east on Anaheim Street from the Gaviota Anaheim intersection.

Safety Alert 43: Three unrelated assaults took place Monday, resulting in three ongoing investigations and one victim being sent to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Once there, they discovered a 17-year-old male victim had sustained a gunshot injury and was transported to the hospital by a private citizen, where he is currently in critical condition. This was at Linden and Burnett.. Two other incidents at 4th and Pacific and 16th and Pine. The third incident is very close to the Monday shooting, and within the Washington Neighborhood. .

Safety Alert: 42: [08/25/2015]  Crime is up significantly for three days. here is increased activity between Walnut and Rose south of 14th Street. The loitering at 1335 Walnut and homeless encampment at Walnut and Anaheim is increased. This coincides with car thefts, assaults and robberies. Please be very cautious on Walnut, Gaviota or Rose south of 14th Street. There are also a lot of incidents along 11th Street from Cherry all the way to Alamitos. This includes a cluster of burglaries along Alamitos and assortment of incidents that trend west starting at Cherry.

Safety Alert 41: Fatal shooting. PCH and Pine. May be gang related.

Safety Update 40The first thing you will notice about this map is a homicide just outside AOC7 boundaries on Tuesday 08/18/2015 at around 9:15pm. While this is out of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood, it's close enough that we are going to look at it. This was a fight that erupted into someone being struck fatally with a bottle. A 50-year-old suspect, Enrique Pina Carillo, is in custody.  Neighborhood Expansion is On.. Please notice the map from the week before shows an assault and property damage trending northeast upwards to where the murder took place the flowing week.

Safety Report 39: A 22-year-old man who died at a hospital after being hurt in a fight in Long Beach was identified today by authorities. Officers responded about 9:10 p.m. Tuesday to reports of a battery that had just occurred in the 1100 block of East 10th Street and learned that Junior Jimenez had been struck with a bottle during a fight with another man, according to Long Beach police.

Safety Update 38: [08/17/2015]: There was a potential arson last night at 10th and Gaviota. Also the assaults that began last week close to Peterson and Anaheim are trending east. There will be an update on Wednesday as well as random neighborhood patrols for the rest of the week. If you have information about a potential arson, contact the Fire Department's Arson Unit at (562) 570-2585

Safety Update 37: [08/09 to 08/16] Okay there's some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the MacArthur Park Neighborhood was nearly crime free this week. The bad news, on Monday I had a text from friends in the AOC7, that there had been a shooting. While this shooting wasn't fatal, it left three people injured and a juvenile in critical condition. It also happened outside a residence well known for criminal activity.

Safety Update 36The Long Beach Police Department’s (LBPD) North Patrol Division has arrested 17 members of the North Side Longos gang since this past May, they announced Friday. According to a release, North Patrol Division Directed Enforcement Team (North DET) gathered information linking the gang to a “violent crime spree” earlier this year, and spent the past few months identifying individuals associated with the gang who were responsible for the crimes.

Safety Update 35: So far this week the neighborhood looks really good. Please keep an eye on Junipero and 15th as car thefts outside the neighborhood are trending that direction.

Safety Update 34: This is a combination of three maps for the week of 07-19-2015 all the way until 08-08-2015. They will all show pretty much the same thing. Be very cautious around the U-Hail Station on PCH, Rotary Centennial Park and the southern end of MacArthur Park. There is a recurring trend of assaults around MacArthur Park and there is a recurring trend of thefts, especially car thefts around Rotary Centennial Park and Rosa Park's Park by the Dollar Tree.

Safety Update 33: So far our neighborhood looks okay. Keep an eye around Mark Twain Library and the alley behind it. Also there is a little crime that starts at Altimos and 15th trending South East towards MacArthur Park then into the AOC7 neighborhood. Our condolences to the young victim of a murder suicide in Wrigley. The link on the update will take you to the story.

Safety Update 32: The trend of thefts from cars still seems to be hitting close to Sherman. Also keep cars locked around the U-Haul station on PCH. Keep an eye out for suspicious activity west of Alamitos from 16rth on up to PCH.

Safety Update 31: [07/12/2015 - 07/18/2015]: There was much less reported activity, and for at least one week very little violent enough to make the press. You will notice the trend of car thefts and thefts from vehicles has move a little bit south of Rotary Centenial Park, but it still remains in the same area. Earlier maps showed more car thefts in that area, so please keep your cars locked.

Safety Update 30: A 24-year-old Long Beach man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of fatally stabbing his former roommate during an argument. Norman Mathew Perdon was jailed Friday on suspicion of stabbing 38-year- old Allen Estes of Long Beach on July 4, according to Long Beach police. Estes was found around 5:30 a.m. by police near the intersection of East Anaheim Street and Dawson Avenue. He died at the scene

Safety Update 29: Wednesday Safety Watch: There are still some car thefts along in the eastern part of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood. Keep your eye on cars around Stanton and Dawson Street. Make sure to keep cars locked and take valuables out when you park.

Safety Update 28: 07/05/2015 - 07/11/2015: The MacArthur Park Neighborhood was quiet last week; the outskirts, not so much. Within the borders of the neighborhood itself there were mostly car thefts, vandalism and a few assaults in places were assault is unfortunately common in the neighborhood. Based on what happened last week, please keep your car locked around Rotary Centennial Park. Also, be very cautious around Dawson/ St Louis and Anaheim. That was the location of the homeless man who was stabbed on the 4th, and things are still happening in that area, though they are occurring less often..

Safety Update 27: 4th of July Week: [God that was loud]: Most of the illegal fireworks on the 4th of July came from the circled area. The worst area was 15th and Gaviota where residents from three separate buildings with parties of more than twenty each were setting them off in the middle of the street. The same problem, though to a slightly lesser degree, existed on Rose and Gardenia. Mayor Garcia is asking for ideas on how to curb this trend on his Facebook Page. This update also shows where car thefts trended in June.

Police Update: Social Media Threats of Hang Violence.

Safety Update 26: [07/03/2015]: There is a trend of vandalism and theft up Cherry starting at 10th Street. Also a trend of breaking and entering and property damage along 10th to the east of Cherry. Unreported tagging remains light in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood right now. Police have also released comments on the uptick in violence in Central Long Beach for June as well as the social media rumors about gang retaliation that have accompanied them.

Safety Update 25: [06/21/16 - 06/28/15] Keep an eye on PCH. Especially, where it intersects with Altimos Blvd. Crime is clearly down in MacArthur Park. There are three places you should keep your eye on. Right outside out neighborhood, keep you eye on Altimos Blvd, especially where it crosses PCH. Please do this for two reasons, the first being crime is up along that corridor. The second is that's the corridor that leads north to the neighborhood where the homicide of Alicia Faith Todd took place on 06/24.

Safety Update 24: [Washington Neighborhood]: The Long Beach Police Department's SWAT Team has ended their search following a fatal shooting Monday morning near downtown Long Beach, according to authorities. The SWAT Team concluded their search with negative results, according to LBPD officials via Twitter. The streets near the 800 block of Cedar Avenue—the site of the shooting—remain closed as the homicide investigation continues, officials reported Monday afternoon. Anyone with information regarding this incident should call LBPD dispatch at 562.435.6711. This story was updated at 11:00AM with information on street closures.

Safety Update 23 [06/14 - 06/21]: Most of the activity in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood that got reported to the police included were either assaults or property damage. Just like in the past, these incidents trend north East as you get later in the week. This week there was also a lot of tagging along the south side of 15th street. This included the mailbox, light posts, walls and alleys from Gardenia all the way to Walnut. Then it continued down Walnut and showed up a little later on Peterson. All that tagging happened some time Friday evening after 11:30pm.

Safety Update 22: How Long Beach lost its anti gang unit, A brief history of how one one the largest city's in California lost it's anti-gang unit when we transitioned from the former to the current mayor, without any public safety debates taking place.

Safety Update 21: Mid week update. The clearest patten was that everything happened on Monday. Even the things you do not see off the map, happened on Monday. This pattern would even continue if this map were extended east and west.  Remember property crime is a good indication of where future incidents will occur. Also that line in the middle of the map has now repeated for the fifth time. In other words, keep an eye on Walnut and stay safe any time you traverse 14th from Grundy to Rose.

Safety Update 20: [06/01 - 06/14]: So, we start with the bad news. There was a homicide at 17th and Altimos on 06/05/2015. It took place around 10pm. I have looked for suspect pictures or more information on the story and have, so far, not been able to find any. This was the second homicide in Long Beach that night, the other one being in North Long Beach. Now notice what the map above shows, the loitering and tagging are all trending north east. They either begin at Altimos and 17th or Walnut and 14th street. The pattern is very obvious. The loitering and the tagging and the fireworks all tends to begin around 9pm. Follow the link for more details,

Safety Update 19: [ 05/24 - 05/31]:  A trend of thefts from cars follows Anaheim and then trends North East following unreported neighborhood tagging. Just outside of our neighborhood there was a rise in breaking and entering cases. Be vigilant in case it trends south west.

Safety Update 18 [05/17/2015]: The car thefts are down, but have not completely stopped. There was one on the 1300 block of Gaviota very close to Anaheim on Sunday 5/24 also one the same day a little further down by Anaheim & MLK. There was also this post on Next Door: "On Orange and Walnut we found footage we found a pack of five guys, all Caucasian, scoping out cars with flashlights and breaking into them around 3 AM."

Safety Update 17: Crime is clearly up more than 100%, and that should not be a surprise. Most of that crime is car theft. Virtually all of it is property crime. 05/17 - 05/24.

Safety Update 15: Theft from a car yesterday, around 16th and Grundy. Keep an extra eye in that area, especially with the tree trimming on Grundy. 5/20/2015.
Safety Update 14: [05/10 - 05/17]: Most crimes this week in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood centered around PCH and trended South East. Follow the link for more complete details.

Safety Update 13: Due to the amount of loitering that the U-Haul at Gaviota and PCH has caused over the last 20 years please instead use the Penske at the Home Depot just at the Home Depot on Spring.

Safety Update 12: There were three incidents in the same place on 15th on the other side of Cherry. More than likely they were all tagging in about the same area.  Keep an eye on 15th for taggers on both sides of Cherry.

Safety Update 10/11 [04/26 - 05/09]: I have no idea what happened to update #9. In all likelihood, I simply can't count. Basically, week one there were two car thefts, both centered around 15th - 17th street. They both took place later at night. The second week, does not fit nicely into a pattern. There were another two auto thefts and two residential burglaries. Most of this was centered around the central area of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood in a horizontal pattern.
Safety Update 8: [4/26/15] Our crime free month has come to an end with a string of car thefts down walnut. There were also car thefts in Rose Park and virtually everywhere else on the crime reports map. Note: ours came on the same day when there was a string of tagging along 15th street from Walnut to the other side of Orange.
Safety Update 7: Vehicle theft spike in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood. Watch cars on Walnut especially south of 14th where crips gang tagging occurred on virtually the same day. One theft also took place on Gardenia and 15th. Many of the thefts took place between 8 and 9pm.

Safety Update 6: Keep your eye on 10th and Altimos. Also tagging sprung up on 15th street, running along the south side from Walnut to Orange. It also ran south along Walnut towards Anaheim. Keep watch on those streets as well.
Safety Update 5:  There was a few stolen cars on the 5th, most of them south of 15th street. Keep an eye on the cars at heavily trafficed intersections like 15th and Walnut, and Peterson or Grundy close to the park. There were also two incidents on Rose close to the metro station. Keep a close eye on cars there, remember one side is not lined with any homes so it's only watched from across the street.
Safety Update 4: The Long Beach Police Department has arrested two individuals over the last two weeks that are responsible for numerous commercial burglaries, several which occurred along the East Anaheim Street corridor. Read the story on the Long Beach Page.

Safety Update 3: Complaints received from the community in regards to bike thefts near the Belmont Pier prompted East Divisionfs Directed Enforcement team to focus on these types of crimes in that area, in addition to coordinating a bike theft sting that resulted in three arrests, and the issuance of five misdemeanor citations. Read the story.
Safety Update 2: [Subject: Recent bike thefts]: apparently, many of the bikes that are stolen (especially from downtown) end up being sold from around the Lincoln Park area...my friend found all three stolen bikes, which had been altered to look as if they were different, like with different baskets or water bottle holders...See the entire post on Long Beach's website
Safety Update 1: [Read LB Police Chief Jim McDonnell's article] A lot of tagging is gang related. Here's what LB Police Chief McDonnell wrote in 2014 about where Long Beach's fight against gang violence has been and where it's going.
