Neighborhood Schools

MacArthur Park is home to one public school and one preschool. Just north of the school in Signal Hill is the local middle school.


 

Whittier Elementary is a kindergarten through fifth grade school located in culturally diverse central Long Beach. Whittier is a single track (Track B) year round school. Whittier provides students with a strong instructional program. High expectations for academic achievement are coupled with the right of all students to a safe and secure school environment.  

Creative Arts Preschool is a preschool in Long Beach that offers fun and educational child care. They have been locally owned and operated in Long Beach since 1972 and have always dedicated ourselves to providing a safe and fun environment for their students.

Nelson Academy [Just north of MacArthur Park]: The $45 million Nelson project at 1951 Cherry Ave. includes 31 classrooms, administration offices, a library/media center, gymnasium, health office, serving kitchen, multipurpose room and other support facilities.  Outdoor facilities include a soccer field, five basketball courts and an open quad with hardscape and landscape areas.

LBCC Pacific Coast Campus: Long Beach City College recently celebrated its 85th Anniversary. Classes began on September 12, 1927, with a student body of 500. Today, over 32,000 area residents attend classes each semester. Fall 2014 will mark the opening of the second phase of the new Multi-Disciplinary Academic Building. The facility boasts state of the art instructional space, and is among the best in the nation; including 'smart' classrooms/lecture halls, new laboratory space,

Additional Student Resources:

The Long Beach Public Library including the Mark Twain Branch in MacArthur Park has a Family Learning Center located in each neighborhood library. The Centers offers a collection of homework support materials and computer-based learning opportunities to enrich student study skills.  

Family Learning Centers provide
:

  • Supervised homework assistance for students on a drop-in basis.
  • Computers with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to help students complete their homework assignments.
  • Books, reference materials, databases, and other online resources to support student information needs.

Along with these services, Family Learning Centers offer parents the opportunity to interface with library staff, get assistance using library materials, and learn how the library can help their children. Call your neighborhood library for Family Learning Center hours.
