Sunday Safety Update: 10/25/2015 - 11/07/2015

Disclaimer: Please note these maps are meant to show which direction crime is trending, areas to keep an extra eye on and places to remain vigilant in order for Central Long Beach residents to remain safe. That said, previous trends don't guarantee future trends will repeat in the same direction and patterns. Also, an absence of crime in one area, does not guarantee an absence in that same area later on. as well.

There was a a trend of residential burglaries on the streets just north of 15th last week. They begin around Sherman and 15th on Sunday and trend both east and west into this week. 

Afterwards, they trended west and north. Also note there is a pattern of burglaries on the other side of Rotary Centennial Park this week and last week there was a trend of auto thefts trending up, in about the same place. 

Please read up on preventing burglaries, since they are clearly up. 

This week assaults are up beginning at Cherry and trending towards MacArthur Park. From there, they end as auto thefts pick up and begin trending north towards PCH. From PCH, those  crimes trends back to it's starting place. In other words, keep your eye open everywhere.

Shootings Outside Our Neighborhood: 

An early Saturday morning shooting in central Long Beach left one man dead.
Officers were called at 3:26 a.m. Saturday to the 1000 block of Olive Avenue on reports of a shooting, according to the Long Beach Police Department. When officers arrived, they found a man who had been struck by gunfire. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded and transported to a local hospital. - Full Story

There will soon be a page here to collect information on all shootings, make victims into names instead of numbers and make it incredibly difficult for anyone who does something so cowardly to count on their actions being forgotten.

* Within MacArthur Park: There have been less shootings, but crime is still up. Please keep an eye out for your neighbors. The MacArthur Park Community Association will be paroling at the least twice during the week and once during the weekend. Any suspicious activity will immediately be reported to police. Also until 15th street clears up, there will be morning patrols to look after the pathways to school.

There was a West Division forum on Human Trafficking and a Public Safety meeting by the first district. A separate write up is coming soon. I will have links to the write ups soon. Sorry for the delay.

Thanks to Paulette, AOC7, and the Kids Who Voluntered at Yesterday's Clean Up

There was a very successful clean up at the east end of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood yesterday that got Stanton Pl, 15th, Juniper and 17th. Thanks to Paulette who organized the clean up and provided the prizes. Also thanks to everyone, including the AOC7 members and the neighborhood kids who came out and volunteered. A few residents were so appreciative, one signed up to host the dumpster on the 24th. By the way, there will be another clean up in about the same area on the 24th. We'll probably go west and try to get Sherman that week.

We also got the remainder of 17th Street this morning from

Walnut to Orange. In places, 17th is a lot cleaner than it has been in the past. In places, we still have a lot of work left to do. In all, between the two weeks we tackled 17th Street it took four 32 gallon bags.

It gets progressively worse as you approach Orange. A lot like Walnut south of 14th, this is where several large apartment complexes begin to collect. We're going to be working on a more effective way of keeping these areas clean. Next week, on Sunday, we will get Ester Street and the remainder of Orange that we did not get the last time around. 

Next Saturday we will be assisting the AOC7 on their neighborhood clean up; I welcome all of MacArthur Park to join in.
 

Sherman Clean Up 15th to PCH Finished

There was an announced clean up of 15th street today. And there were some volunteers, so things went a little faster. We'd like to express our appreciation to Frank, a resident since February who helped for almost an hour and a half with the worst side of Sherman Street. For those who are not familiar with the layout of Sherman, one side is very wide with diagonal parking spaces so the help was very much appreciated.

With some help, sherman was clean in just under 3 hours.

In all about 96 gallons of trash was removed. Next week, at 10am on Saturday, we will round out our three week focus on the east end of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood when we tackle cleaning Stanton Street from 15th all the way to PCH. Actually, Stanton doesn't go all the way to PCH, so we will be tackling Stanton from 15th, just shy of PCH. Everyone in the neighborhood is welcome to join in. Everything you need to participate will be provided.

15th Street: Cherry to Junipero is Clean

15th Street from Junipero to Cherry is clean. This is the first time we cleaned 15th street east of Cherry. We will be getting Stanley and Sherman soon. Stanley and Sherman may take a little longer as they are both somewhat wider than the average residential street in the MacArthur Park neighborhood.

Remember the second, re-visioning meeting for Cambodia Town is today at 12pm at Mark Twain Library.

Second 15th Street Clean Up

15th street was again cleaned from Cherry to Orange. This time trash was picked up/ weeding and leaves were only picked up in the alley way closest to the Carneceria at 1732 15th Street. 

This is the second time we have cleaned 15th. The first was on 03/14/2015, about a month and a half ago. Since that time, every street in the neighborhood has been cleared of litter at least once.

Below is an indication of what the alley will look like in the coming days. The alley was weeded and cleared of trash up until the end of the blue market. Getting any more than that will require some additional space in my trash cans.

It was nice to meet new neighbors along 15th street as well as reconnect with those that I met the very first time there was a neighborhood clean up. I will say that the street was significantly cleaner than the first time I picked up trash along it. It still took longer than I wanted it to, however, I was out of practice.

Next week, there will be a clean up on Walnut from PCH to Anaheim. However, it will take place on Sunday so I can help the AOC7 with the literacy fair taking place at MacAthur Park.

Peterson Cleanup Finished: 15th to Anaheim

Today Peterson Street was cleaned up from 15th to Anaheim. There will be an unannounced cleaning of Warren Street tomorrow, mostly because I intended to get Warren today but just did not have the time to clean up that much trash and attend the second meeting of the Anaheim Re visioning Project.

Thank you to all the neighbors along Peterson, 14th and 15th street that simply took the time to say thank you for the gesture. Below you can see a before and after picture of Peterson where it approaches Anaheim Street.

There could also be a little more attention to the walkway around Mark Twain Library where Peterson approaches Anaheim. You can see the side by side of the library's before and after picture on the Next Door posting.

Next week, on Saturday 04/25/2015 at 10am, there will be an announced cleaning of Gardenia from PCH to Anaheim. The meeting place will be at PCH and Anaheim. Volunteers are welcome. Provided will be four rolling garbage cans, iron claws, gloves, brooms and bottled water. See the clean up schedule on the neighborhood cleanup page.

Unannounced Sunday Clean Up On Gaviota

I held off cleaning Gaviota. Since it's my street, I thought that may look a little selfish. Anyhow, I don't care to live on a dirty street so every now and then there will be an unannounced street cleaning early Sunday. In the future to find out where those cleanings will be, if they will happen at all, show up early for the scheduled Saturday cleanings to find out where. 

There will be things to give away to MacArthur Park residents, or anyone who pitches in, on those days.

The two pictures show how much trash was on my side of Gaviota, from PCH to 15th street. I am a little surprised actually as I had o go down 3/4ths of the way down the major street Walnut from PCH to Anaheim yesterday to approach that much trash.
