Wrigley Clean Up Chestnut 23rd to Burrnett: Neighborhood Expansion

Picked up 32 gallons of Trash most of it was Cigarette ends, Business Cards, Broken Glass and some odd ends of Trash, even an used Condom! Eww, lol  Lots of people attended, go Thankful, people passing by gave us thumbs up, said Thank you, good job but all in all it was a good day. Cleaned up the broken glass so no one gets a flat tire. We will pick another part of the Community to Clean up. Wednesday Safety Watch: Neighborhood Expansion

What the map shows is a steep drop in crime this week within the MacArthur Park Neighborhood. There were some assaults just outside of the AOC7 to the west heading North East into the Poly/ Central neighborhood. Be real cautious in this area as there was a homicide there not long ago. The two for one were car thefts at 11th and Molino, this trends towards a robbery just outside our neighborhood towards vandalism at 14th and Dawson.

There is increased crime in the Franklin/ Altimois Beach area. Be aware of thefts begining at 7th and Almond that trend South West towards Altimois Blvd and the beach. Also the property damage in and around Franklin occured on Monday, which is incidentally the first day the students were on break.

There is increased crime in Central Wrigley, specifically along Cedar. These are mostly car thefts that begin at 9pm or later. If you're in the area pleas join Wrigley Community Neighborhood Group to stay in the loop on Wrigley crime trends.

Off the map there are also a high volume of assaults taking place west of Alamitos Blvd. Please be cautious around Myrtle Avenue and 7th Street, especially when you are on 7th between Long Beach Blvd and Atlantic Ave.

Long Beach Is Under A Tsunami Warning

A tsunami advisory has been issued for the coastline from Southern to Central California following an 8.3-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chile, according the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The advisory included coastal areas from San Onofre State Beach in San Diego County to Ragged Point, about 50 miles north of San Luis Obispo.

"If you are located in this coastal area move off the beach and out of harbors and marinas," the NOAA said in its advisory.

Officer Involved Shooting Near MacArthur Park

I do not have all the details but I want my neighborhood to be aware of what happened today. I was driving home around 3:30pm when I saw the police cars, a lot of them, heading down PCH, then turn south on Alamitos. After a drive through the neighborhood, I realized a serious incident may have been centered somewhere around MacArthur Park. A man suspected of carrying a gun was arrested by Long Beach police at MacArthur Park Thursday afternoon following an officer-involved shooting according to authorities. Later reports added the suspect was not hit and officers were not injured. At the moment, the entire park is closed down as a crime scene, as is Anaheim from Orange to Walnut. I will update with more information as I learn it, here are the news stories I could find.

Meeting on Starting a Community Watch Next Tuesday

Long Beach residents are invited to the MacArthur Park/Whittier School Neighborhood monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 18, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Mark Twain Neighborhood Library located at 1401 E. Anaheim St. in the Community Room. Free parking is available at the library parking lot.

The City of Long Beach Neighborhood Services Bureau in conjunction with the Long Beach Police Department will be holding an informative forum on the importance of and how to form a community watch program. This session will provide residents and community leaders alike an overview of a community watch program including the benefits vital to maintaining a safe community.

Sunday Safety Update 10 and 11

Last Week's Break Down (04/26 - 05/02): Two car thefts took place in our neighborhood. So the only pattern for the week of 04/26 is two vehicle thefts. Both of which take place on 17th street or close to 17th street. The first on 16th street is at 8pm and the second is at 10pm on 15th. This is why most articles that tell you how to stop car theft will tell you report it ASAP. 

While you are debating what to do, the car thief may be heading east to steal another car.

Sorry, last Sunday's Safety Update is late. I was playing a Church in Arizona last Sunday and did not have computer access to post. Since next week information repeats this pattern, here's the article on keeping your car safe once more. 

This Week's Break Down (05/03 - 05/09): This week was not as light. There were two auto thefts and two residential burglaries. This map also doesn't show the vandalism that has been taking place all week at 1732 15th street either. When the graffiti appears it's a reliable sign crime is about to increase. 

* Another pattern to be on the look out for is this. The first night tagging appears, will probably be followed by another night when someone crosses that tagging out and puts their own in its place. And those two events will probably happen within 48 hours of each other.

Notice there is still a pattern of car thefts. I will say, past car thefts have taken place in both of these areas before. Keep a close eye on anything parked on 17th street, Walnut, Rose and when parking by MacArthur Park. 

In addition to the two car thefts, there were two residential burglaries. Time wise, there was no pattern to the burglaries that took place on Warren or Gaviota. The Long Beach PD, has posted numerous articles on crime prevention. Since half the issues in the neighborhood were burglary, here's the Long Beach PD's advice on preventing burglary.

* Also, while neither of these maps is ideal, I will say compared to some of what is going on around it, they are still very encouraging.

Second 15th Street Clean Up

15th street was again cleaned from Cherry to Orange. This time trash was picked up/ weeding and leaves were only picked up in the alley way closest to the Carneceria at 1732 15th Street. 

This is the second time we have cleaned 15th. The first was on 03/14/2015, about a month and a half ago. Since that time, every street in the neighborhood has been cleared of litter at least once.

Below is an indication of what the alley will look like in the coming days. The alley was weeded and cleared of trash up until the end of the blue market. Getting any more than that will require some additional space in my trash cans.

It was nice to meet new neighbors along 15th street as well as reconnect with those that I met the very first time there was a neighborhood clean up. I will say that the street was significantly cleaner than the first time I picked up trash along it. It still took longer than I wanted it to, however, I was out of practice.

Next week, there will be a clean up on Walnut from PCH to Anaheim. However, it will take place on Sunday so I can help the AOC7 with the literacy fair taking place at MacAthur Park.
