There Was An Announced Clean Up of 15th Street - Updated

There was an announced clean up of 15th Street from Orange to Walnut. The good news is that 15th Street was significantly cleaner than it was in the past. 32 gallons of trash was removed, and normally that distance would take twice as many bags. 

I will be trying to get the rest of 15th Street tomorrow, if there is time. Because this is Spring Break, which I have off, there will be additional clean ups this week, at least I hope. We'll also try to get a dumpster for larger items soon. Sorry, no before and after pics, I didn't have time.

The Sunday Safety Update will be published tomorrow, with some big news. The Go Long Beach Run was finished with 14 requests. 1 tagging, 9 illegally dumped items and 4 curb repair requests.

We continued this clean up on Easter Sunday and got from Cherry to Gaviota. That only leaves Gaviota to Walnut untouched. We would have gotten more but the alley by the Carneceria took up a lot of space in the can. Below you can see a before an after picture of that alleyway. It was important to clean because gangs do try to congregate there, so that alley in particular needs to look well kept.

 

Grand Opening MacArthur Park Playground

From NextDoor: There will be a grand opening ceremony at MacArthur Park this Saturday, March 26, at 10 am to celebrate our new playground equipment and our newly renovated facility. The morning's activities will include entertainment by the Afrikan dancers and Street Dance Crew from Homeland Cultural Center, and the reading of a poem especially written for the occasion. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, and to tour the facilities afterwards.

In an effort to better enable and encourage Long Beach residents to strengthen their communities, We Love Long Beach, a local nonprofit organization, is hosting this third event to help neighbors CityWideBreakfast1build positive, long lasting relationships for the ultimate goal of creating a safer and healthier neighborhood environment. 

This year's City Wide Breakfast in MacArthur Park will be held at my house, the neighborhood is invited, but please RSVP through the email address above, I believe this will be the first event hosted through We Love Long Beach in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood. The Event is made possible through an organization called We Love Long Beach.

Sunday Safety Update: 12/06/2015 to 12/12/2015

Trends within the MacArthur Park Neighborhood are scattered and week. There is a weak trend of breaking and enterings beginning at 15th and Lemon and trending north east towards 16th an Alamitos. Times vary from noon to 9pm. Just below that, in Cambodia Town West and Cerritos Village, there is a stronger trend of thefts from cars trending north west. At the same time a tend of assaults is trending east along 11th Street. 

Be reminded there was a homicide in this area a few months ago; no neighborhood association exists there yet, and a spike like this proceeded that shooting.

On the other side of Junipero you will see a huge spike in Car Thefts and thefts from cars. These all seem to start from an unreasonable noise complaint that happened around midnight at the 1100 block of Ohio and then radiate out NW, NE, and SE. Keep your cars locked and safe. There is a clue in the patterns here: all the thefts from cars seem to be happening during the day, all the car thefts seem to be occurring at night.

Within the circle, on the south side of our neighborhood, there are some petty thefts along Anaheim. They all occurred on Wednesday and they all occurred during the day. In other words, everything happening in Central Long Beach, at least all the clear pattens are just to the South East or South West of our neighborhood. 

The patterns inside, are pretty weak and scattered.

Arrests Made in the Shooting on Gundry

After making one arrest last month, Long Beach police arrested three more in connection with a fatal gang shooting November, police announced Tuesday. Jeffrey Keo, a 26-year-old Long Beach resident was gunned down around 9 p.m. Nov. 10 in the area of 14th Street and Gundry Avenue. The killing prompted an hours-long search that included SWAT officers.- Full Story

Shootings Outside Our Neighborhood:

Fortunately, the one shooting that has occurred is way outside of our borders. 

Police are investigating what they believe could be a gang-related shooting in North Long Beach Thursday afternoon.

Officers were dispatched around 12:20 p.m. to an assault with a deadly weapon call in the area of Orange Avenue and East Washington Street, said Nancy Pratt, a police spokeswoman, in an email. They found a man who had been struck in the upper body at the scene. - Full Story

While I did miss the Wed update this week, the map at the time showed very little happening in the neighborhood. Though it doesn't show up on the Crime Reports Map there is also a lot of activity on Orange and 17th Street. There was a Go Long Beach Run this morning which showed a significant decrease in both dumped items and tagging, however some of those dumped items may have been picked up in yesterday's clean up.

District One Meeting: El Niño Preparedness

There was a meeting tonight at Drake Park sponsored by Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez. While the meeting focused on Community Watches, there was also time spent on the Go Long Beach App, Homeless Services and El Niño. 

Because we covered Community Watches in a previous meeting, we'll be focusing tonight on being prepared for El Niño in this write up.

El Niño is a change in weather patterns that stands to change temperatures and weather patterns in cities like Long Beach. Where our average downpour is around 12 inches, El Niño can double the down pour. This usually comes in the form of four storms. One major storm brings about an inch and a quarter of rain, the rest resemble your average winter shower. 

While an inch and a quarter of rain doesn't sound like a serious issue, in addition to flooding it can cause extensive erosion and rip tides. Tonight's meeting, as it relates to El Niño was all about knowing what to do before, during and after the storm.

BEFORE THE STORM

• Clear rain gutters
• Have lumber, tarps, duct tape to repair leaks as they occur
• Cover patio furniture
• Keep at least 1/4 of gas in your tank
• Have an emergency kit.
• Have important identification in plastic bags
• Have copies of phone books that are not in cell phones.
• Prepare for special needs: IE Autistic kids/ insulin etc
• Have sand bags in flood areas
• Use Nixle/ Social Networking and stay connected
• Find a weather service and pay attention.

DURING THE STORM

• Listen to news that can help
• Avoid water above ankles
• If water comes up to top of your tires it isn't safe to continue
• Stay on familiar train
• Avoid down power lines
• If you see downed lines call 911

AFTER THE STORM

• Pay attention to news about drinking water
• Sewer breaks may require you to boil the water
• Have water purification such as bleach tablets in emergency kits
• Avoid disaster site seeing.
• Don't handle downed power lines
• Replenish emergency kits

The City of Long Beach also has a plan for the coming storms. This plan will include the clearing of 5300 basins, testing 28 pump stations and having the Fire Department make sand and sand bags available to the public. Sand will be available at 1651 San Francisco. Sand bags are available at Fire Stations 7, 12, 13 and 14.  Additionally, Parks and Recreation will be creating berms and clearing rain gutters for all government facilities. Fire will identify places where the Swift Water Rescue Response team may be needed. Police may be called on to alter traffic control patterns and activate search and rescue teams when needed. 

Also, while El Niño will help the drought in California, it is unlikely to undo it.

09/20/2015 - 09/27/2015: Inside the MacArthur Park Neighborhood the map looks good. I am most concerned with what I see inside the AOC7, Cambodia Town East and the Zaferia Neighborhood to the east of Old Zaferia Way. First off, here's what the map shows. Within out neighborhood, the most concerning robbery trend starts at Anaheim and Junipero and seems to trend northeast and out of the neighborhood. What concerns me even more is the trend of car thefts, and thefts from vehicles heading southeast, right where that trend ends.

Normally, I would declare neighborhood expansion and start attacking the graffiti in Cambodia Town East where that activity is the worst, but the online version of Go Long Beach is broken since the last city website update. So far, every single district and the Mayor of Long Beach has not responded to the information that is website doesn't work. 

I have contacted every city agency I can think of, the website developer and posted on the Long Beach City Facebook Page.

Within the AOC7 there are some thefts and assaults clearly trending south west. There are a few burglaries to the west of that that seem to be trending the opposite direction. Keep a very close eye on the west end of the AOC7 and the Craftsman Historic District. This is right about where Lincoln Elementary is. There is no neighborhood association in this area. Also there was a fatal shooting in exactly this area about a month ago.

Within our neighborhood, there is no clear pattern and nothing is really clustering together. The "Q" was for a drug bust on the outskirts of MacArthur Park. There was also an isolated car theft at Anaheim and Alamitos. There is also one isolated robbery just north of Cherry and 15th. The map doesn't show this but there was tagging along Orange and Cherry Ave, after a long tagging hiatus. That tagging is a little harder to remove with Go Long Beach broken. 

The most obvious activity is along Junipero at the east end of the neighborhood. That said, it seems mostly to be trending away from the MacArthur Park Neighborhood. Finally, where you see that blue arrow, keep your bikes locked up. I will go into detail later, after passing the information on to law enforcement.

What Makes A Good Neighbor?

What makes a good neighbor? Here are some accomplishments that earned people this title on Next Door.

* One neighbor was able to petition the city to demolish an old, unsafe, abandoned apartment building. In its place, he created the Edgerton Community Garden.

^ Another neighbor saw his neighbor’s home on fire, he didn’t hesitate. He jumped into action, calling the Austin Fire Department and saving both his neighbors and their beloved home.

* A Florida neighborhood started a nonprofit called Neighbors Helping Neighbors, collecting usable furniture, household goods, and clothing for anyone who may need the items.

* While they are not on the list, I would like to throw an honorable mention to the AOC7, for hosting a literacy fair that got 10,000 books out to neighborhood kids in my own area.

^ A Tennessee neighbor was nominated for beautifying areas in their Sylvan Park neighborhood. He has planted new trees, plants and flowers for others to enjoy. He also waters, gardens and encourages other neighbors to join in.

* After a brutal attack in Oakland, CA a neighbor and his wife used Nextdoor to invite neighbors to a BBQ potluck. Nearly 100 neighbors showed up, and it was an opportunity for Nextdoor neighbors to strengthen bonds within the neighborhood.

Clean Up: 09/26/2015: 17th Street from Gardenia to Orange

There will be a clean up in the MacArthur Park Neighborhood that will get trash off 17th Street. We will be starting at 17th and Gardenia and heading west. Clean ups occur virtually every Saturday at 10am. Volunteers are always welcome. This will be the third time we have cleaned 17th Street.

09/13/2015 - 09/18/2015: This map looks really good overall. There is a few things going on outside the neighborhood. There are some random scattered activity outside the neighborhood border. The most obvious is on the other side of Alamitos and 17th. Since there have been two shootings in this area, keep your eye open here, be safe and stay observant. There is a weak trend showing that activity trending north east.

A lot that the map does not show is also way down. The neighborhood is seeing less dumping, less tagging and less loitering in places where the loitering had gotten way out of hand. As a matter of fact, some tagging, that had been up for up to six months, because it was somewhat hard to get to, also came down this week.

At Walnut and Anaheim, there was a burglary and a theft. It appears that is also trending north east towards Cherry and 14th. There are also a string of vehicle related crimes that start around Stanley and 11th. This is in an area defined on Next Door as Cambodia Town East. They appear to be trending South East, but keep cars locked in the south east end of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood, that could change any time.

I am still working on creating an unsolved violent crimes page, so that no victim of a violent crime in this Central Long Beach becomes a statistic instead of a name.

In Long Beach itself, there have been no further shootings and violent crimes outside of our neighborhood since the last update. I am hoping for that trend to continue. Hopefully, we get a few more maps as empty of incident as this one in the weeks to come.

July to August: MacArthur Park Crime Totals

July Stats (MacArthur Park Neighborhood Only):

1. Theft from Vehicles (13 Total): No obvious pattern.
2. Theft of Vehicles (7 Total): Mostly clustering around Rotary Centennial Park. 
3. Property Crime (6 Total): They usually happen south of 15th Street, much like the assaults
4. Quality of Life (5 Total): Two at each park which are possession. The other is disorder.
5. Breaking & Entering (5 Total): Mostly clustering around Rotary Centennial Park.
6. Assaults (5 Total): They seem to follow 14th Street. Also around Rotary Centennial Park.
7. Robbery (4 total): Mostly clustering around Anaheim towards the park.
8. Theft (4 total): Depends greatly on how you define the neighborhood. No real pattern.
9. Homicide (1 Total): The 4th of July Homicide. Suspect in custody One unsolved outside the neighborhood.
10. Sexual Offense, Fire, Emergency, Proactive Policing Other (0 Total)

 August Stats (MacArthur Park Neighborhood Only):

1. Property Crime (9 Total): All west of Gardenia. Otherwise, no pattern/ up 30%.
2. Theft from Vehicles (8 Total): No obvious pattern. On other side of Old Zaferia Way this more than doubles. Down about 30%.
3. Assaults (6 Total): No pattern; even spread. Up 16%.
4. Theft (6 total): No real pattern. Up 33%.
5. Theft of Vehicles (4 Total): No obvious pattern. On other side of Old Zaferia Way this more than doubles. Down 42%.
6. Robbery (3 total): Be careful in the alley between Walnut and Gaviota. Down 25%.
7. Vehicle Recovery (2 Total): Anaheim and Walnut/ Stanton and 15th. Not recorded last month, but up 50%. 
8. Quality of Life (1 Total): Meth/ PCP at Cherry and PCH. Down 80%.
9. Breaking & Entering (0 Total): 100% improvement
10. Homicide (0 Total):Down 100%. There was an attempted shooting at Gaviota and 14th. Drive by/ suspected as gang related.

39 Total Incidents (22% Decrease in crime)

Summary: In August there were 39 total Incidents ( a 22% Decrease in crime). Theft from Vehicles, theft of vehicles, robbery, breaking and entering, homicide, quality of life, are all trending down. Assaults, robbery and property crime are trending up.

Sunday Safety Update: 08/16/2015 - 08/23/2015

The first thing you will notice about this map is a homicide just outside AOC7 boundaries on Tuesday 08/18/2015 at around 9:15pm. While this is out of the MacArthur Park Neighborhood, it's close enough that we are going to look at it. This was a fight that erupted into someone being struck fatally with a bottle. A 50-year-old suspect, Enrique Pina Carillo, is in custody. If you look at the previous week's map, always available on the neighborhood safety page, you will see crime was trending that direction before this homicide took place.

Neighborhood Expansion is On. That means in addition to reporting any tagging, dumping or suspicious behavior in MacArthur Park, our own neighborhood, we will also be keeping an eye on AOC7 for the few weeks, as well as an area to the west of the AOC7. It looks like activity in that area is trending west. Activity along 17th and Cerritos is trending southwest and converging in about the same area.For that reason, we're going to keep an eye on exactly that area, especially after 9:00pm.

Earlier news was that police had released footage of a person of interest in the June 28th homicide of Iran Maese. You can reread that release. We embedded all the videos and even captured a picture of the person in the video to enlarge it.

In the MacArthur Park Neighborhood, there are car thefts starting around Anaheim and Peterson trending up towards Gaviota and 17th and then towards Sherman and PCH. I am going to go out on a limb and say the lack of car thefts around Rotary Centennial Park will not continue into next week. Please reread the following article to help keep your car and belongings safe. 

Just to the east of our neighborhood it looks like some car thefts are trending southwest and then back up northwest where they trend back into out neighborhood. Because of this, be very cautious around Anaheim and Dawson. Also anyone who lives south of the neighborhood keep a close eye on 11th Street from Walnut as far east as Templel. There were a lot of things happening on 11th, including two robberies, starting at Gardenia and 11th that then also trend northwest back towards the MacArthur Park Neighborhood.

Early warning this week. Keep safe around Peterson and 15th as well as on PCH between Gardenia and Cherry.

Concilman Dee Andrews To Host Budget Summit Tonight.

Long Beach City Councilmembers Dee Andrews and Roberto Uranga will host budget summits for the Sixth and Seventh Districts on Monday, August 10 at 6:00PM at Veterans Park in Long Beach, their offices announced yesterday.

According to a release, Andrews and Uranga are using the meeting as a means of reaching as much of the community as possible before the commencement of the City Council Budget Sessions regarding the 2016 Budget. All residents of the 6th and 7th District are welcome to attend. And attending in our often overlooked neighborhoods would probably be a very good idea.

Announced Clean Up Orange Anaheim to 15th Finished

There was an announced clean up of Orange Street from Anaheim to 15th. just shy of Rosa Park's Park yesterday. The street was significantly cleaner than the first time it was hit, especially around the vacant lot at Werner and Orange. The one place that is still in need of some TLC, is next to the Dollar Tree at 15th Street.

It was good to meet four neighbors on Orange, all of whom expressed an interest in helping build a nicer community. Though to be fair, one resident called that Saturday a little hot and humid to be picking up trash. Our next clean up will be on Saturday August 1st. This is a special clean up in that it will be focused on MacArthur Park to prepare it for the Night Market the next day.

Safety Update: 24 Year Old Arrested In July 4th Stabbing

A 24-year-old Long Beach man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of fatally stabbing his former roommate during an argument. Norman Mathew Perdon was jailed Friday on suspicion of stabbing 38-year- old Allen Estes of Long Beach on July 4, according to Long Beach police. Estes was found around 5:30 a.m. by police near the intersection of East Anaheim Street and Dawson Avenue. He died at the scene.

Help bring the families of the victims closure/ and keep everyone safe.

There is a huge homeless encampment at Walnut and Anaheim nightly. I think the city should probably be on the look out for the safety of everyone there. Also Walnut from 14th down, much like 17th and Orange, has issues with juvenile loitering, competing tagging, trespassing, fireworks and higher than par assaults on the Crime Reports Website. When, passing close to Walnut and Anaheim, be extra cautious.

I know in at least one case, someone does.

The following information reflects the fatal shootings in or near our neighborhood. Officer involved shootings are not included, neither are shootings were a suspect is in custody. This is simply so everyone in the neighborhood knows who was a victim and where it happened.

17th an Alamitos Area:

Anthony Holston III, a 20-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, June 5, near the intersection of East 17th Street and Alamitos Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records. East side of the Alamitos and 17th intersection.

Tomas Palmas, a 42-year-old Latino, was shot and killed July 10 in the 1700 block of Cerritos Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. West side of the Alamitos and 17th intersection.

There is usually a tremendous amount of loitering at the area of 17th and Orange, so someone very likely knows something. Also, considering, what elements of our city government live very close to this intersection, it should be the safest intersection in Long Beach.

North of MacArthur Park/ Just South of Signal Hill

Alicia Faith Todd, a 21-year-old black woman, was shot and killed Wednesday, June 24, in the 1100 block of East 21st Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Close To Downtown

Iran Francisco Maese, a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, June 28, in the 700 block of Linden Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Douglas Jerome Wilson, a 37-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, June 22, in the 800 block of Chestnut Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Home Improvement Rebate Program (HIRP)

Tonight: 06/16/2015: 5pm. Long Beach residents are invited to the MacArthur Park/Whittier School Neighborhood monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Mark Twain The neighborhood Library located at 1401 E. Anaheim St. in the Community Room.  Free parking is available at the library parking lot.

The City of Long Beach Department of Development Services, Neighborhood Services Bureau invites you to attend its’ monthly public meeting to gain valuable information about the city’s Home Improvement Rebate Program (HIRP).  Presented by Antoinette Jeff (HIRP Coordinator), this residential improvement opportunity is a Community Development Block Grant program that is funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.  The program is designed to assist property owners with the cost associated with the improvement of deteriorated exterior conditions (deterioration that is visible from the street) of approved properties within the city of Long Beach. 

During this information session, property owners and tenants alike will gain knowledge about this valuable city resource that can assist them with improving the exterior of the property and/or correct any exterior code violation(s).  Also during this session, program guidelines and eligibility requirements will be discussed.

Quick Safety Update: Tagging on Gaviota by Chittick Field

Three incidents of vandalism were reported yesterday at 7:24am on Gaviota just north of PCH. Please keep an eye open around Chittick Field, as well as the other three neighborhood parks: MacArthur and Rosa Parks, for tagging and or destruction of property. Other than the continued tagging at 1732 15th street, this week has been quiet so far.

Update: 05/13/2015: Additional tagging on 15th and Walnut last night, buildings and alleys. Note most of the tagging is taking place on streets like Walnut or 15th, and that is a very predictable and reliable prevention pattern to be on the look out for.

Sunday Safety Update: 04/19-2015 - 04/26/2015

Our crime free month has come to an end with a string of car thefts down walnut. There were also car thefts in Rose Park and virtually everywhere else on the crime reports map. Note: ours came on the same day when there was a string of tagging along 15th street from Walnut to the other side of Orange. There was also tagging that same day down Walnut from 15th. The tagging on that street was black in color and probably from the Crips Gang. There was also reported tagging on Altimos in red from the East Side Longs.

You will notice around the same time a pattern of car thefts following the V in the map. On the other side of Orange, since none of the streets are connecting the person responsible was more than likely coming from Altimos Blvd, the only street that closely connects all incidents. Please follow the link to keeping your car safe one more time. Be on the look out for any more tagging along major arteries like 14th or 15th street. There was also an officer involved shooting on the south side of Anaheim close to a storage facility. You can find the full details here. 

On Thursday, April 23, 2015, at approximately 2:45 P.M., officers responded to a residential multi-unit complex in the 1100 block of Hoffman Avenue regarding a report of several subjects unlawfully trespassing and vandalizing inside a vacant residence which resulted in an officer involved shooting. 

This is the second death in the area this year. While it is tragic, I think we should also give the police credit from bringing the numbers way down. Also the loitering at Orange and 17th, seems to have been brought to a halt. The first was the stabbing at Cabrillo on the west side of the 710. In this latest shooting, it was one of five suspects who were killed while engaging in criminal activity including vandalism, gang tagging and breaking and entering.
